Anissa’s Story – Post #32 – A Tempting Offer… But The Devil Was In The Details…

The dictionary describes “longsuffering” as showing self-restraint in the face of provocation, the opposite of anger and is associated with mercy. It was God’s mercy that kept our faith strong when the anti-seizure drug Sabril (vigabatrin) was not released by the FDA as had been expected for Anissa, previously in 1997.

In the meantime, another new drug, Gabitril (tiagabine), was prescribed. It helped diminish severe tremors/shakes and curb digestive reflux, creating a better appetite, which enabled Anissa to function better physically. But mental confusion took away her ability to feed herself or work her puzzles without help. Once again, when a higher dose of the drug was prescribed in an effort to raise the level to hopefully control the seizures, it caused her to relapse. Her body was unable to tolerate the Gabitril dosage and health-wise, she went rapidly downhill.

At that low point of Anissa’s life, alternative therapy was prescribed by her neurologist. It was a type of antioxidant therapy which combined the amino acid N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) along with therapeutic supplements of B-6, B-2 and magnesium. Studies using NAC therapy revealed a slowing in deterioration of the neurodegenerative process. Research also confirmed that cysteine can help to build and maintain an effective immune system. There was a significant improvement of Anissa’s overall health, until the dosages were raised, then the seizures worsened. A small maintenance dose worked best and Anissa’s health was restored!

At that time, NAC was being used for treatment of cystic fibrosis and is presently used to restore health to the liver, especially as a result in over dosage of Tylenol (acetaminophen). We had to order, by prescription, a special liquid formula of NAC from the pharmacy at the University of Florida Hospital where the Veterans Medical Services were researching and implementing NAC therapy. It was explained to me that the composition of their formula was able to get past the blood barrier of the brain; whereas, many NAC supplements do not. Currently, reports indicate that NAC is one of the most effective agents available for scavenging free radicals and is considered a type of universal antidote.

Alternative ways of healing are often suggested or offered to families such as ours. Tempting opportunities cross our paths and in desperate situations, many persons have been deceived by false hope and sometimes false claims. What can control seizures for one person might work the opposite and be poison to another. The Word of God says to pray about all things and to try the spirits.

“Beloved, believe not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is the spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” 1 John 4:1-3

Our first experience along those lines happened when Anissa was having 30 to 40 tonic-clonic seizures daily until she could barely breathe during the summer of 1975. An opportunity with all expenses paid was offered for us to take her to a clinic in Arizona. The intention of the heart of the person was loving and pure in wanting to help Anissa, but the avenue was based on the theory of a psychic medium who believed Jesus Christ was reincarnated rather than the only begotten Son of God.

That was our first experience in recognizing how “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). God’s pathway, instead, was to supernaturally deliver Anissa at that time, enabling her to be free of seizures for an entire year. To put faith in anything or anyone but the Living God can impair one’s judgment. A person may be easily deceived if blinded or ignorant of the Holy Bible which is God’s Word to us. Safe guards to consider when such temptations surface include prayer, seeking Godly wisdom, careful research, wise counsel, financial cost, interaction with other mediations or supplements being used, allergies and other sensitivities, and, of course, being in agreement with a spouse or co-guardians.

Anissa’s Story – Post #33 – Victory In The Trial…

After a two-year wait for the release of the anti-seizure drug Sabril (vigabatrin) for Anissa, it still was not available by 1999. It was suggested that we might want to consider trying Topamax (topiramate). We decided it wasn’t worth the risk since kidney stones were reported as one outstanding side effect. Remembering how her kidneys shut down when an infant due to the drug Phenergan, also, that she would have no way of telling us of any pain afflicted, attributed to our decision. We were told of one parent whose child was taking the drug, that although it helped curtail partial seizures, an increase of tonic-clonic seizures was noted.

Since Anissa had shown patterns of autistic behavior, she began undergoing tests in March, 1999, that qualified her to receive infusions of Secretin at the Autism Research Institute in Palm Bay, Florida. Jeff Bradstreet, M.D., was in charge of the research and also administered the Secretin infusions. Anissa responded in a very alert and positive way after the first treatment but then experienced an allergic reaction with the third IV.

Prior lab testing for Anissa had included Food Allergy IgE & IgG Analysis, Hormonal Evaluation Urine Organic Acid and Brain Protein Antibodies with a Serotonin evaluation. The Myelin Basic Protein Antibody test showed “positive” deterioration of the myelin sheath of nerve passageways in her brain, but MRI scans have never verified such. The doctor suggested that Anissa might be a candidate to receive an IV of Immunoglobulin. Since she would need anesthesia during a 24-hour period, such therapy could not be instituted.

There were many new anti-seizure medications being released during this period of time. Our hope was that each one would be the “miracle” drug we had been waiting for, but it did not prove to be so. On March 10, 2000, Anissa was prescribed Trileptol (oxcarbazepine) which caused a greater increase of seizure activity.

Then in September, Zonegran (zonisamide) was prescribed which seemed to affect a certain area of her brain that alleviated some seizures but limited the verbal ability to communicate and execute certain physical tasks. As in the past, when first starting a new drug, Anissa usually would have a positive reaction, but as the dosage builds up in her system, she reacts with more seizures. Zonegran proved to be no exception and in October she totaled over 350 jackknife with tonic type seizures. After cutting the dosage to half of the original prescribed amount, she experienced more seizure-free days that enabled her to take long walks. By mid-November she made it to ¼ mile. It had been 14 years since she was able to walk that distance.

In January, 2001, Anissa weathered a siege of four fractured toes when her right foot forcefully slid under the bathroom door as she began to fall backwards. Since taking Zonegran, there had been a noticeable unsteadiness with her standing from time to time. She was an excellent patient but seizures were a challenge as we had to protect her foot from further damage for the bones to fuse correctly. After several months Anissa was able to resume her walks outdoors and soon our normal routine emerged.

We did not enjoy the “fiery trial” but were so thankful of prayer warriors petitioning God’s mercy and His Excellent Grace for our victory!

Anissa’s Story – Post #34 – Trials & Errors Of The Journey…

Our journey could be described as a course of ruling out any medication or alternative method that would not be beneficial to Anissa’s overall health, while at the same time alleviate the violent seizure activity.

In mid-April, 2002, we noticed a very strong metallic odor in Anissa’s breath and stools, as well as an abnormal hair loss and increased seizure activity. As a trial series for better seizure control, she had been taking the antibiotic, Biaxin (clarithromycin), 250mg daily for six months. It was noted that whenever Anissa had taken that medication in past years, even during a sickness, she would be almost seizure free. Biaxin can reduce the clearance of Tegretol, raising its levels. The strange thing is that whenever Tegretol would be given in a higher dosage, Anissa would only have more seizures, including digestive upset with acid reflux. The antacid, Tagamet (cimetidine), reacts in a similar way with Valium (diazepam).

“Happy – blessed, fortunate [enviable] – is the man who finds skillful and godly Wisdom, and the man who gets understanding—drawing it forth [from God’s Word and life’s experiences]. For the gaining of it is better than the gaining of silver, and the profit of it than fine gold.”

Anissa’s blood test revealed a toxic level of Tegretol, so it was reduced from 1200mg to 800mg and the Diazepam from 20mg to 12 ½ mg daily. By mid-June her drug level was normalized and hair loss stopped but the upset seemed to cause more violent complex seizures. Her mental development was at a standstill, but her physical health remained in excellent condition. The caregiver’s challenge became greater in protecting Anissa during the violent seizures. Throughout the years, the knowledge gained from that experience has alerted me to think “research” if such “symptoms” should arise.

It was during this difficult time that a non-invasive brain surgery using “gamma knife” was being conducted for certain types of epilepsy, but being non-verbal kept Anissa from being considered as a patient. The anti-seizure drug, Keppra (levetiracetam), was approved for partial complex seizures. Also, aromatherapy had been reported as being effective for certain people with epilepsy.

One news article stated: “In Birmingham, England, jasmine was shown to dramatically reduce the effects of epilepsy in one patient. All unconscious, dysfunctional electrical discharges of the brain, which occurred every ten seconds, totally stopped after a patient was administered aromatherapy using jasmine only two times.” After showing the article to Anissa’s neurologist, he said, “Why don’t you first try the aromatherapy and then you will have a true evaluation. I will give you a sample of Keppra to try later, if you want?” Of course, we agreed!

Since aromatherapy was not a familiar avenue of healing, my lack of knowledge and faith required more information. Here were the research facts discovered: (1) “Essential oils illicit an immediate olfactory response and they are readily absorbed into the bloodstream. The olfactory membrane is the only place in the human body where the central nervous system is exposed and in direct contact with the environment. When an olfactory receptor cell is stimulated, an impulse travels along the olfactory nerve to the limbic portion of the brain, where memory, hunger and emotion is evoked. Before consciously knowing we are in contact with an aroma, our subconscious mind has already received and reacted to it. (2) Jasmine is considered very antiseptic and can bring balance to hormonal changes or disruptions. Its powerful aroma indicates it should be used in small doses, never taken internally unless under the care of a doctor and should be used with great caution for infants since their nervous system is still being developed. (3) Epileptics often get what is called an ‘aura,’ a strange smell or taste of something that does not exist, just before a seizure. Olfactory hallucinations are a symptom of epilepsy [especially in the brain’s temporal lobe] … often leads to bizarre behaviors. (4) Sugar uptake increases during a seizure and falls below normal between seizures. (5) A recovering brain can increase its capacity to form new memories.”

Balance is very important for Anissa’s wellbeing so the Jasmine Essential Oil was first diffused with a vaporizer and later added to her bath water. Her response was favorable in helping to control the seizure activity, but there were still over 20 days in a month’s time that she experienced one or more seizures a day.

It definitely was an accurate report concerning the validity of aromatherapy, for which I am grateful to have learned. Having physicians willing to try new methods for seizure control in Anissa was the result of prayer and

Anissa’s Story – Post #35 – Clear And Present Angels…

By February, 2003, having received a valid and favorable experience with the Jasmine Essential Oil therapy for Anissa, it seemed a good time to start her on the samples of Keppra, 250mg at bedtime, as prescribed. After the fourth dose, she began such profuse urination day and night that was injurious to her health because of dehydration, so the Keppra was discontinued. One month later, we again gave the drug another try, only to discover even worse side effects. Not only did Anissa have profuse urination but seizures multiplied into series of spells and the downhill progression began even though the drug was stopped. Over a period of six months, she would go three or four nights weekly without sleep. It was miraculous that she could even walk with the help of another person, as her fine motor skills and mental alertness had deteriorated immensely.

But to the amazement of all, Anissa continued to surprise us with miracle feats that uplifted our faith, giving us incentive to carry on during troublesome times.

One evening (9-22-03), an exciting thing happened when Anissa wanted in bed. My husband took that opportunity to go fill our car with gas, so I decided it would be a good time to vacuum the bath and bedroom floor while keeping an eye on her. I swept under the hamper, lifted the scatter rug to sweep, put it down, turned to clean in the sink area and there came Anissa walking, holding her blanket in one hand. At first I thought her dad was in back of her and that I had just missed hearing him return, but then I noticed that his hands were not on her arms.

Momentarily stunned, I held onto the sweeper and said, “Where did you come from?” She looked absolutely normal and I will never forget the way she looked at me, as if to say, “Well, isn’t this what I’m supposed to do. I need to go to the potty.” I heard myself say aloud, “I can’t believe it, but I do believe it, because here you are!” Anissa had not walked without assistance for 17 years, nor has she done so since that day. She had shoved the railing out from her bed, walked over the sweeper hose and around many obstacles – making me to know that a Divine presence had charge over her. Then I remembered that several months earlier, while watching television, an evangelist/prophet had spoken that on this same day at 5:00, an angel would be dispatched to our home and to expect a miracle. That prophetic word was fulfilled to the minute – WOW!

“And you shall rejoice in all the good which the Lord your God has given

Several weeks later, as my husband walked into the kitchen, he was thrilled when Anissa took notice and said, “Daddy!” Since then, others have noted how at times she looks intently at the person talking to her – something not done in the past. With autistic mannerisms, she had always seemed to be in her own little world, while at the same time be very much aware of words being spoken.

When her daddy suddenly passed on to Glory the following year, 12/19/04, everyone wondered how Anissa would cope and if she would miss his loving affection. During a six month period, it was noticeable how her countenance would light up when she heard certain male voices. She interacted more with men and intently studied their faces. At such times, God is the One who always filled any void in our lives with a greater abundance of His Excellent Grace.

Anissa’s Story – Post #36 – Survival By Prayer – In The Eye Of The Storm…

Little did we know how the perseverance over past years would prepare our faith to face even greater challenges in the year 2004. During January, a week of prayer was set forth at our ministry’s Wellspring of Life Retreat Center. The retreat involved many intercessors from churches and ministries seeking the Lord’s favor for miracle breakthroughs concerning brain and nervous system disorders. During that week, Anissa had only one mild seizure – considered miraculous since daily seizures had been the norm for her.

Previously, her neurologist had suggested we consider a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) implant for Anissa that could maybe lessen the severity of attacks. Because of the significant change for the better following that week of prayer, we did not pursue the VNS implant until later, in June, when seizures had returned with a vengeance. After the epileptologist at Shands Neurological Center had seen Anissa and studied her charts, he said, “You better get your group and preacher to pray for her again!” He informed us that, to his knowledge, the oldest person to live with Lennox Gastaut Syndrome was 28 years. At that time, Anissa was 37.

The epileptologist’s assistant happened to be present when Anissa experienced a very hard sequence of seizure activity: jackknife into tonic-clonic into psychomotor (complex partial) and myoclonic, so the assistant ran quickly to get the epileptologist. It was the only time in Anissa’s life that a doctor was present to see first-hand how devastating such spells can be and described the hard thrusting of her arms as “fencing” motions. Afterwards, the “odds” given by the doctor regarding the VNS implant were not favorable for the type of seizures that Anissa experiences, as well as her “self-mutilation” to any strange body sensation. Also, she would have a four to five day hospital stay for video documentation of seizure activity, MRI and other testing. With my husband’s restricted breathing and need of oxygen, I would have had to stay with Anissa. Considering all things, the doctor felt it was important to best follow our “gut” feeling.

Shortly thereafter, I heard a minister share the following: “One day a hunter came across a bear in the woods. ‘I want a full stomach,’ said the bear. ‘I want a fur coat,’ said the hunter. ‘Let’s compromise,’ suggested the bear – and promptly ate the man. As a result, the bear went away with a full stomach, and the man went away wrapped in fur.” This lesson became clear that if we parents/guardians do not protect our own health, we could all be eaten alive. So rather than compromise our overall health with more stress, we decided to wait.

The decision proved right when four hurricanes hit our area during August and September – certainly a “proving ground” of our faith. “Frances” was our most challenging because of no electricity for five days – “Charley” was three days. We were most grateful that no structural damage occurred with our house and the retreat center. The main thing we learned: Preparation and Preparation! Afterwards we wasted no time in purchasing a generator! In 90 degree+ heat, cold baths were shock therapy for all of us, but seemed to affect Anissa in a positive way with less seizures – or was the good effect due to so many prayers being offered on Florida’s behalf from around the world?

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady. Then, when that happens, we are able to hold our heads high no matter what happens and know that all is well, for we know how dearly God loves us, and we feel this warm love everywhere within us because God has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.”

My hope and faith needed to be strong and steady when on 12/19/04, more stress took its toll in our lives. While my husband, Anissa’s “daddy”, was attending church that Sunday morning, with his tithe and offering in hand, he suddenly died of cardiac arrest, possibly triggered by his emphysema/COPD. All in all, it was a year never to be forgotten and believe me, any survival was totally dependent upon prayer, God and

Anissa’s Story – Post #37 – God’s Timing…Is Always Right.

After my husband’s glorious heaven-bound journey, 12/19/04, the legal documents to sign and bills to be paid soon filled the top of my dining table. Keeping Anissa’s records, as well as that of our ministry and personal needs, was something my husband could do since he was physically unable to care for our daughter during his afflicting trial with emphysema/COPD. It was very difficult for me to undertake such book work, but life goes on. Anissa enjoyed riding in her transport chair as I took her with me for business appointments and necessary shopping.

“In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and He heard me.”

Psalm 120:1

In the spring of 2005, while searching the Internet for the latest discoveries that might help Anissa, I became interested in PCA-Rx, a Peptide Clathrating Agent, being favorably used for autistic children. It was documented as a “most effective chelating substance to clear heavy metals, toxins, plaque, pesticides, chemicals and residues from past bacterial and viral infections” from a person’s system. Remembering how Anissa chewed paint off the bedroom furniture when she was about five years old and the possibility of lead exposure, it seemed a good time to try PCA-Rx. With her lack of verbal communication, my prayer was for a sure sign to know the validity of the product. After only two days of several sprays in her mouth, Anissa’s teeth took on a noticeable change. By the third day, the hard calcified-type of mineral deposits that had built up on her right jaw teeth had totally disappeared! Several months later, Anissa’s lab reports revealed only a “trace” of lead.

By summertime, the sequence of seizures were much harder and more difficult for me to handle, especially if Anissa was in the tub, on the toilet or in an unprotected place. The prayers of many intercessors helped to sustain us, but since there was no let-up of seizures, a consultation was scheduled for us at Jacksonville’s Mayo Clinic. Their use of SISCOM, an imaging technique to help pinpoint the site of epileptic seizures, had gotten my attention.

Anissa was evaluated by Mayo’s neurologist, Dr. Chabolla, who seemed amazed that she could even walk with assistance. He confirmed that she had lived much longer than the norm for one suffering with Lennox Gastaut Syndrome. He said that some survive into their late twenties, but most do not live past their teens – Anissa had just celebrated birthday 38. The doctor knew of another girl about the same age with LGS who lived with her parents. The only recommendation that Dr. Chabolla gave was to continue the “loving care” and perhaps a new drug Lyrica (pregabalin), approved by the FDA for an adjunctive therapy, could possibly help reduce the severity of the seizures.

During the last week of September, 2005, it seemed as though Anissa’s whole body was beginning to shut down. As my thoughts turned to burial plans, suddenly I heard: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. The meaning of your daughter’s life has always been to help others and so shall it be in her death. Her brain is to be given to medical research.”

The following day began my search for the right Brain Institute. Four days later, around 6:00 a.m., Anissa awoke me by gently touching my arm. Thinking she might need a consoling touch, I laid my hand on her but she chose to move it back to my own pillow. So, I decided to go ahead and fix some cereal so she could take her prescribed meds and then get her to the bathroom. As I tried to arouse her from what I thought was a very deep, peaceful sleep, there was absolutely no response and no pulse or heartbeat.

While fervently praying, I applied a type of stimulation two separate times that caused her body to arch, but still no sign of life. On the third try, I said, “Anissa, you cannot die yet because I haven’t received the information necessary to have your brain go to research as the Lord has requested!” Instantly, she abruptly began coughing numerous times and within ten minutes she was able, with my help, to walk to the bathroom. The following day, the information regarding organ donors arrived. It took about one month to set up everything with the Rare Disease Initiative Coordinator at The National Resource Center, Philadelphia, PA.

As Anissa’s mother, the victory I see of her life is to witness the “supernatural” resilience to “rise again” after so many violent seizures. I have learned that sometimes the power of God used to establish His Kingdom on earth is brought to pass by very weak and unlikely individuals who rely upon His Excellent Grace!

Anissa’s Story – Post #38 – The Silver Lining In God’s Plans…

The beginning of 2006 was off to a very bumpy start for Anissa. After taking the prescribed medication, Lyrica (pregabalin), she could only tolerate a 50mg dosage due to stomach distress. The higher doses caused her greater mental confusion besides having a very negative effect in controlling seizures.

Upon hearing a speaker say, “A survivor is one who finds meaning in the suffering,” the following scripture describes a meaning for Anissa’s survival . . .

“We are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith not by sight. We are confident, I say, and well-pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well-pleasing to Him.”

Since Anissa enjoyed and prospered during many sleepless nights from special scenic videos with calming music, our ministry began a project to create a one-hour video geared for the profound, mentally challenged person. The acoustics at the retreat center was great for recording a Messianic Psalmist, whose gifted voice can soothe a troubled soul. And with the Lord’s provision of a multi-talented engineer supplying his computer knowledge, as well as audio equipment, the video was completed and has been a blessing to many.

At the same time music therapy became recognized by the medical profession as a therapeutic treatment for dementia and other types of mentally challenged patients. The doctor prescribed such therapy for Anissa, so I video-taped each session. There were some very positive signs but the unpredictable seizures would divert her focus, besides creating an interference of schedules. As in years past, a positive program had to be suspended due to Lennox Gastaut Syndrome – the multiple seizure saga.

In May, one of Anissa’s teeth abscessed. Remembering those past grueling experiences in setting up visits with a pediatric dentist, anesthesiologist, neurologist and orthodontist at the University of Florida Hospital, as well as the tremendous expense of such, my prayers were fervent for a reprieve. After several appointments ended with negative results, finally, a brave and compassionate dental surgeon came to the rescue! He and his staff were so efficient and commendable in giving the IV sedation and extracting two of Anissa’s teeth that took less than one hour. Also, the fee was very favorable, saving us at least $7,000, which was the cost at UFH ten years earlier each time she was admitted.

Another miracle was how a couple, who worked with disabled persons, just happened to have a day off at their jobs and were going to be in our area. They were most willing to help and what a blessing it was!! Anissa healed rapidly and maintained excellent health for the remainder of that year – except for seizures.

Several months later, a vision came before me of a picture of Anissa’s face on the cover of her Book of Life – Revelations: 20:12 – with these words written:

CALLED BY GOD AS HER MOTHER’S HELPER

TO BUILD HIM A HEALING CENTER WITHOUT DRUGS

“For you see your calling, brethren that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who was made to us wisdom from God … that, as it is written, ‘He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.’”

I have seen just how much God can achieve in using such weak things, according to His Word and by His Excellent Grace, so that He alone receives the Glory!

Anissa’s Story – Post #39 – A Great Trial Of Affliction…

New searches still remained on our journey’s quest to find relief for the unrelenting seizure activity that Anissa experienced day in and day out. In June, 2007, the doctor ordered an MRI scan of her brain. The scan showed slight atrophy of the cerebellum, which was considered very minor for her 40-year age, and that structurally, her brain appeared very healthy. Again, it seemed to confirm the seizures were the result of a chemical imbalance that all began when the drug Phenergan was prescribed for her at six months of age. Since hospitals have a limit of keeping such records, I obtained the video to have for future comparison, if needed.

During this time, I was made aware of David Perlmutter, M.D., FACN, a board-certified neurologist, recognized as a leader in the field of complementary medicine and his Health Center in Naples, Florida. After reading his scientific articles published in the Journal of Neurosurgery and The Better Brain Book, a consultation with him seemed wise. His suggestions were numerous before he viewed Anissa’s MRI. He then witnessed firsthand of her having a full-blown multi-type seizure. Afterwards, he ordered a comprehensive analysis of her blood which showed a slight deficiency of the antioxidant, Glutathione and her Lactobacilli was below optimal levels. Otherwise, all tests were excellent, which could account for her physical wellness throughout the year.

To better understand the functions of what Anissa’s lab tests revealed as a deficiency, I did research. One significant fact — Glutathione helps the liver to detoxify poisonous chemicals and is important for good immune system function. Since L-cysteine supplements can raise glutathione levels, Dr. Perlmutter prescribed N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC). As previously stated, when Anissa was prescribed NAC in 1997, her overall health improved – likewise, this time.

A probiotic containing lactobacillus acidophilus was added to her daily diet that improved her digestive system. A valid test was conducted several times when she was without the supplement for over a week, to then have the old symptoms of digestive/bowel upset reappear. Before probiotics became prominent, the choice was enzyme therapy for symptoms of digestive disturbance, but in order to replace proper flora of the gut, a good probiotic is needed.

Anissa’s physical health remained stable throughout the following year, until she had dental work on December 23, 2008, which required two teeth extractions. Late on Christmas Day, her right cheek began to swell, indicating the need for antibiotic therapy. Evidently, the infection had interfered with the proper function of her brain. At 5:00 the following morning, as I was helping her walk towards the bathroom, her upper torso moved forward while her feet stayed put. This caused Anissa, as well as “momma”, to suddenly plunge forward, thus projecting Anissa’s face forward onto the floor with me on top.

The fall struck Anissa’s left cheekbone and within several hours both sides of her face were affected with eyes swollen almost shut. Very destructive type of seizures became more numerous and her incapacitated walking remained, but it was midnight before the evidence of a broken left clavicle [collarbone] surfaced. Being the holidays, she had to be treated at the hospital’s ER. After x-rays of face, knee and shoulder, a restraint-type sling was provided and was a helpful blessing during the many daily hard seizures that followed.

“For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that a tender branch thereof will not cease. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth and the stock thereof dry in the ground, yet through the scent of water, it will bud and bring forth boughs like a plant.”

Job 14:7-9

For five months, it was 24/7 concentrated care with orthopedic visits and x-rays to make certain the clavicle bone adhered properly with no more protrusion. Anissa’s recovery transpired in accordance with the Word of God and remained strong because of

His Excellent Grace.

Anissa’s Story – #40 – Extreme Faith…

Many obstacles had to be overcome and battles won during the recovery of Anissa’s broken clavicle. But a light began to shine out of the darkness as the new anti-epileptic drug, Banzel (rufinamide), was prescribed on February 13, 2009. Once the drug was increased to 800mg daily, a definite positive change became evident as nocturnal seizures stopped and Anissa’s sleep was peaceful.

Increasing Banzel to the recommended dosage of 3200mg daily caused stomach distress and had no extra benefits, so the lower dose was resumed. In general, her cognitive ability improved even though the devastating type seizures still continued. In June, the neurologist ordered Frisium (clobazam) for Anissa on a compassionate drug basis, as it had to be purchased from the UK/Canada. Hopes were soon dashed after several doses when she became so hyped with violent shakes and increased tremors, yet, no change in seizure activity.

Upon the annual visit to Anissa’s neurologist in December, he was able to view the various seizures experienced by her that had been recorded onto a DVD. The doctor made the comment of never before seeing such a sequence of seizures in one episode. He said they might be Behavioral Seizures, involving the temporal and frontal lobe of the brain, which could only be determined if Anissa had an EEG at the time of the episode — and that was not possible.

In the midst of the chaotic times, prayer was our sustaining factor. It was early summer when I had heard the voice of God say: “I want you to establish a Prayer Clinic in Ormond Beach.” My first thought was, “What is a Prayer Clinic?” Such a new assignment would have been overwhelming for me, except, at that time, we were blessed to have responsible Directors overseeing our ministry’s healing retreat center in O’Brien, Florida.

After locating the building and signing a lease for the Clinic, I returned home and immediately went into prayer, confessing my stand of faith unto the Lord, saying: “As You were with Moses, You have also promised to be with me. You told Moses exactly how to furnish the tabernacle for your Glory. I have no idea what You want for the Prayer Clinic, nor how to furnish it. Your Word says that You are the same yesterday, today and forever, so I await your guidance, in Jesus name. Amen.”

Instantly, I heard: “six stack chairs, lavender blinds, table with lamp, three lounge chairs, bookcase, desk, TV stand.” As I pictured the size of the rooms, I wondered where three lounge chairs could possibly go — but everything fit perfectly — exactly what was needed!

On the first day when the Clinic opened for prayer, Anissa was totally out of control with non-stop loudness of voice — regardless of our prayers and efforts to appease her! Afterwards, I determined in my heart to shut the doors and never go back! Compared to the stress of that situation, I did not care about the loss of money, contract or reputation — but my Heavenly Father did care!

The Spirit of the Lord came strongly upon me and said: “Return with your daughter at your side. I will take care of her.” After that day, for six years, Anissa slept soundly at the Clinic in one of the lounge chairs, Tuesday thru Friday, 10 am to 2 pm, regardless of the lights and noise around her. By the end of the sixth year, she began having episodes of uncontrollable seizures which signaled to me that there would be a change – and there was!

“The Lord hath done great things for us and we are glad … Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy. He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing.”

Psalm 126:3, 4-5 NKJV

Looking back, I have learned that if God did not lift His hand of Grace at times, we may never know how merciful and powerful He truly is! The awesome ways we witnessed Divine intervention take place at the Prayer Clinic during those six years certainly helped to build our faith!! It was definitely a year of change where weeping was for many a night, but more joyful times also abounded because of His Excellent Grace!!!

Anissa’s Story – Post #41 – Life Is Not Free Of Storms. Trusting God Through It All…

While Anissa’s brother was visiting us in July, 2010, it finally happened that he was present to video tape one of her most dangerous type of seizures. Upon showing the video to her medical doctor, he commented: “If she was in a nursing home type facility, within one week she would wind up in the hospital.” Simply because they would not have the necessary means to care for her one-on-one unless she was bedridden. Also, Anissa’s communication skills are seldom verbal unless she yells and then the caregiver must decipher what her actions mean. The danger is greatest while walking or even in a wheelchair, due to her legs, arms and torso thrusting hard in opposite directions.

Another new drug, Vimpat (lacosamide), was prescribed. The first week of that medication seemed to make Anissa more alert. But after several weeks, tremors caused her head to shake so violently that food would fling out of her mouth and the seizures became more intense, so the drug was stopped immediately.

It was in 2011 that Anissa’s beloved neurologist for over thirteen years was no longer able to see her. So, to prevent the long trips to Melbourne, a neurologist in our locality seemed a wise choice; whereas, his first order was to have an EEG done.

To obtain an accurate brain wave test required that she receive no extra medication that would put her to sleep. Because of the constant head tremors, the technician had a very difficult time getting the wires glued to Anissa’s head and wanted to forego the test, which I totally understood the negative response.

It was then I mentioned how prayer can change things. I invited the technician to join with me in prayer, but she let me know very quickly, saying, “I do not believe in that stuff!” Knowing the importance of the EEG, I believed God for a miracle, so I asked if she would please proceed with the test while I would quietly sing to Anissa — she reluctantly agreed. As I was praying and softly singing in Anissa’s ear, a very deep sleep came upon her, amazing the technician, as well as myself!

The completed report read as follows: This is a diffusely slow abnormal tracing. There are multiple spike discharges seen throughout the tracing. This seemed to be fairly symmetrical. These occurred on every page of the tracing, spike and spike slow wave activity, which had the frequency of about two per second. Three minutes of hyperventilation was not performed. IMPRESSION: Severely abnormal EEG, consistent with a generalized seizure disorder. The neurologist’s interpretation: “The report shows that seizures in her brain never stop and unless medical research discovers a new medication, there is no answer!”

Several months prior to the EEG, due to the hard clenching of her jaws during violent seizures, Anissa had to have three more teeth extracted. With only front teeth remaining, that meant she must have puree or soft foods at mealtime.

As the challenges became greater, so did God’s Grace! He gave me the courage to drive to North Carolina for my granddaughter’s wedding. It was a four-day round trip and since restaurants were not an option, I had to pack enough of Anissa’s special foods to last. Also, it required taking her bath lift plus other essentials that filled up every space in the car. The good Lord made the way for a very special friend of mine who lived in that area, along with her Pastor, to stay with Anissa while I attended the wedding and a short time at the reception.

It was wonderful to see the many relatives and later that evening to visit with family at my son’s home. Except there be a change for the better concerning my daughter, it’s not a trip that I desire to repeat! The perfect weather and Anissa’s love to travel eased the stress considerably, for which I give thanks and can only attribute the blessings to His Excellent Grace!
